Don’t Let Bad Writing Cost You

I have a rule when shopping online: If I encounter one mistake on your Web site I will not order from you. It doesn’t matter if you have the best product in the world or the lowest cost of something I am trying to buy, I will go somewhere else. Maybe it’s the writer or Journalism major in me, or maybe it’s just my being too much of a perfectionist. But the bottom line is that bad writing is just plain sloppy. Why would you want to lose customers after you have already been through all of the expense of establishing your online business?

If you are not in a position to hire a professional writer (like me!) to edit your site, try these tips to ensure your writing is in tip top shape:

  •  Print your text– It is easier to catch errors on the written page rather than the screen.  Copy all of your text (Control + C) and manually paste it (Control + V) into a standard wordprocessing program like Microsoft Word.  That way you will be able to more easily detect errors and take advantage of the software’s spell check program.  Many html editors I have worked with do not have a spell check capacity so this will enable you to use a spell check program.  Just remember that spell check is not fullproof so it is still a good idea to consult an online dictionary such as Merriam-Webster.
  • Read your text backwards – If you read your text backwards your eye will focus on the individual words rather than the sentence structure.  This will help you catch spelling errors you might have missed the first time.
  • Put some distance in between your writing and editing – If you allow some time in between your writing and editing it will enable you to look at your writing with a fresh eye.
  • Let someone else read it for you – Two sets of eyes are better than one!  Have a friend or family member review your Web site text for possible errors.

Remember, don’t let all of your hard work go to waste and take a chance that you could lose customers due to bad writing.  Time spent editing your writing will be time well spent.

A Must-Have for Busy Moms

I rarley post twice in one day but I wanted all of you Write Gal readers to be able to take advantage of this special discount which ends July 31st at midnight.  One of my favorite Web sites, See Jane Work, is currently offering 35% off of their entire site.  What a DEAL!  To get your discount, enter the code LASTSALE at checkout.

With this super deal I took the opportunity to order a Mom Agenda.  It is a fantastic calendar that starts with the beginning of the school year, August 2008, and goes through December 2009.  If you have never heard of it you must take a minute to read about it here.   Celebrity fans of this great organizer include Felicity Huffman, Victoria Beckham, Kelly Ripa, and Katie Couric.  Now you all know if a celebrity likes a product I am in the know!  What is so great about this is you can put a section on your calendar to organize the activities for each child (up to 4).  But for all of you Mommies of only children like me, use the extra spaces for work, church, volunteering, or whatever.

With my new teaching job starting in just a few weeks, my old Kate Spade calendar just isn’t going to cut it with the extra responsibilities I am going to have.  I have been dying to try this calendar and at 35% off it is the  perfect time to buy it.  I bought one in fuchsia pink to match my new wallet.  See Jane Work has other great office products and accessories too.  I also ordered the Barcelona Pencil Bag to put my white board markers in for class.

Happy Shopping!

P.S. If I don’t post about some writing tips soon I am going to be forced to call myself just “The Gal.”

Attention All Blogging Mommies!

Check out this great new site I discovered called Momdot.com.   If you are a Mom with a blog you need to go there now and get your blog listed for free.  Even if you are not a mommy blogger you can go there to read other fine blogs.  The Write Gal is now included in the Momdot.com blog listings under Shopping.

They also select other bloggers to occasionally write for them.  Trisha, Alicia, & Toni- I want to be your feature blogger!!  Pick me!  Pick me!  Did I mention I was a professonal writer?  It says so on my About Page!  And on my Web site!  🙂  Other people besides my Mom think I am a great writer too.  Check out what my Clients are saying.

Momdot.com also has cool contests.  I am all about free!  As a matter of fact in honor of the launch of their Web site, Momdot.com is giving away a prize every day starting on July 28th with the party ending on August 31st, including prizes daily and feature bloggers, just in time to bang out the end of summer and into the school year. Don’t forget to list your blog for free and connect with other mommies on their forum.

“Green” Grocery Bags

This week it has been very quiet at my house.  The “Little Write Gal” was gone all week to Camp Grandma and then my telephone hardly rang because my BFF Karen was on vacation all week.  Thankfully Holly came home last night and Karen returns today!

Before Karen left she gave me this fabulous reusable grocery bag from Envirosax. These adorable bags are waterproof and come in a variety of modern prints.  With reinforced seams, each surprisingly large bag can hold a weight the equivalent of two supermarket plastic bags, up to 44 pounds. Each one rolls into a small pouch which can easliy  fit in your glove compartment or your purse.  I LOVE mine!  Thanks Karen!

Think about how many of those little white grocery bags you use in a year. If you go to the grocery store one time per week and leave with 10 bags of groceries, that’s 520 bags a year! Wouldn’t you like to reduce the environmental impact (even if you do use them for a small trash can liner later)?  You should definitely order some Envirosax today.  They are cute AND affordable at only $8.50 each.  Check out the adorable kid prints too!

You’d Rather Be Shopping

Apparently I have a lot more shoppers reading my blog than writers.  After blogging for one month now I can see a definite trend in my blogging statistics for my writing vs. shopping posts.  The difference is not as drastic as the picture above illustrates, but you get the point.  One day 50 more people read my shopping post than the writing one the day before.

Does this mean there are more shopping bloggers than writers out there?  Perhaps people read blogs only on certain days of the week?  Maybe it means The Write Gal just has exceptional shopping ideas?   I hope it doesn’t mean that no one cares about The Write Gal’s Write Advice??  HMMM…..What do you think?

Happy Blogging (I think)!

The Perfect T-shirt Necklace

My latest jewelry obsession is Diana Warner Studio – New York.  I recently purchased the Sarah Golden Pearl necklace which I wear all of the time.  It is lightweight and beautiful — the PERFECT necklace for summer and for wearing with t-shirts!  I like Diana’s line because it is fun, flirty, and wearing her jewelry does not break the bank.  Celebrities also love this line — Carrie Underwood, Natasha Bedingfield, and Lauren Conrad have all been spotted wearing her jewelry.

You don’t feel guilty making a purchase when you know your money is going to support a worthwhile cause. After a trip to South Africa this young desginer decided to do something about the immense need for water in that country.  When you purchase Diana’s necklace, “The Obligato” (Portugese for something that one cannot live without), you can provide 10 Africans with clean water for a year.  The wearer not only has a beautiful piece of jewelry, but they also have the knowledge that they improved and touched the lives of 10 people in South Africa.  I am going to buy this necklace next!

Not Just Another Pretty Shoe

My absolute favorite summer shoes are “Shoes that Love You” by OKA b. (pronounced OKA BEE).  I have them in both copper (pictured) and black, but they come in lots of other cute colors like turquoise, pomegranate, and popsicle pink.  Besides being cute and insanely comfortable, these flip flops are made with reflexology technology and have an ergonomic footbed that pamper your feet with every step.  According to the OKA b. Web site, they are even top rack dishwasher safe and will not fade even with repeated washings.  And did I mention they are a bargain at only $30?  The pair I wore all last summer looks as great as the pair I purchased this summer!  Even Oprah likes them and they are featured O Magazine’s August 2008 issue.

So girls, where can you purchase a pair (or two) of your very own?   Local girls can get them at Anne’s Dress Shop (tell Melissa I said hi) but if you are not local you can order them online from OKA b.
